You Oughta Know Hozier

If it’s new talent you’re looking for, then look no further than Irish singer songwriter, Hozier. The man seriously delivered at VH1’s Big in Music 2015: You Oughta Know concert last week. He was also named the VH1 Artist of the Year at the gig.

It’s been an incredible year for the “Someone New” singer, and the Irishman talked of the huge steps he has made in the past 12 months.

“It’s kind of a nice moment for reflection I guess, ‘cause it’s been a crazy…year-and-a-half,” Hozier told ABC Radio.

“To be among these names — I was kind of doing the first few shows with these guys in America as well too— James Bay and George Ezra. So it just feels great, it’s a good feeling,” he added. “It’s nice—we’re all kind of…on the same few steps of the career too.”

Even after months of playing to adoring fans around the world, Hozier said he still can’t believe that his brand of music— especially “Take Me to Church”—has become so popular.  “It was a huge surprise to me that the music connected to such a wide range of people,” he told ABC Radio.

The You Oughta Know concert featured other 2015 newcomers in addition to Hozier, showcasing the likes of, Rachel Platten, X Ambassadors, James Bay, George Ezra, Nate Ruess of Fun, Elle King and Tori Kelly.

With regards to how Hozier’s “Take Me To Church”, a slow, melancholy song about religion and sex, ended up being a radio hit, the singer has a theory.

“Because it was so different, maybe people were drawn to it a little bit,” he said. “I don’t know how it ended up in a kind of a top-10 landscape, but it might have been [that] it was just different sonically, it was different lyrically, and, I don’t know: I just tried to be honest with it.”

With such a fantastic year under his belt, including a Grammy nod and two Billboard Music Awards, how could you possibly top that? How about a show in Dublin, two days before Christmas? Perfect.
