An album of material recorded by the band Viola Beach is set to be released on July 29th on the bands own label. The decision was made by friends and family members of the band after the four young musicians and their manager died in a tragic car accident in Sweden on February 13th.
An official statement released by family members of the band stated: “We believe the best way to celebrate our sons’ lives is to release an album of their songs.”
“This is their legacy and we know deep in our hearts that the boys would want the world to listen to the music they poured everything into.”
“This was only the beginning for them and these nine songs were written with every intention to be shared, heard and, most of all, enjoyed.”
“We hope that it brings you as much happiness listening to it as we know it did to them making it.”
The band were due to play at the SXSW (South by South West) festival in Texas but unfortunately lost their lives when their car fell 25ft from a bridge and plunged into a canal. A tribute was made to the band at the festival in the form of a video montage.
Numerous other tributes are expected over the coming months including a permanent memorial in the band’s hometown of Warrington, UK and a tribute concert led by BBC Radio 1 DJ Phil Taggart.
The band’s sound has been likened to the 1990’s ‘Britpop’ movement, with the band citing: The Coral, The Kooks, The Zutons and The Beatles as influences. Since the accident, two of the band’s singles have been released entitled “Swings and Waterslides” and “Boys That Sing”. The singles peaked in the UK charts at 11th and 80th place respectively and are set to be included on the upcoming album.
