Tom Petty’s 1965 Gibson SG Set for Auction

For fans of Tom Petty, what is about to come up for auction this month is a chance in a lifetime to own some of the rock legends belongings.

You’ll be able to bid on a number of items including: a collection of his guitars, plus stage-worn clothing that once belonged to Petty himself.

The auction will be held in Dallas on July 21st, and some of the big ticket items will be a cherry-red 1965 Gibson SG electric guitar that Tom played whilst touring with Bob Dylan during his 1986-1987 tour. Petty and The Heartbreakers were Dylan’s backing band at the time, and Petty also autographed the back of the guitar in silver ink, “Tom Petty ’88.”

As well as guitars, and for a price of course, you can also get your hands on the brown felt top hat that Petty wore during the Dylan tour. That very same hat made a comeback during the Traveling Wilburys videos “Handle with Care” and “End of the Line.” And the price for the hat and guitar? A cool $300,000.

These collectables are being sold by Norman’s Rare Guitars shop in Tarzana, California. Owner Norman Harris, sold the 1965 Gibson SG to Petty originally and then reacquired the guitar from Tom. The trade consisted of Harris giving Petty a rare Rose Morris Rickenbacker guitar, and in return, Tom handed over the SG and a variety of stage-worn clothing.

You can visit HA.com for all the details, and also on the block will be Petty’s signed 1963 White Gibson SG Junior electric guitar, and a variety of jackets he wore onstage over the years.
