Sum 41 Frontman Received Death Threats

rsz_whibley2Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley hasn’t had the easiest ride over the last few years. Whibley has experienced an ongoing battle with alcoholism, a high profile divorce and now it has been revealed even death threats.

Whibley married pop rock princess Avril Lavigne in 2006. The pair were Canada’s coolest couple but eventually divorced in 2010. The ordeal was reported to have left Whibley shattered.

The singer disappeared from the public gaze for a number of years following his divorce from Lavigne, but made headlines in 2014 when he was hospitalised due to complications caused by alcoholism. After recovering from his illnesses, Whibley posted a heartfelt message to fans on his website in which he stated: “My liver and kidneys collapsed on me. Needless to say it scared me straight. I finally realized I can’t drink anymore. If I have one drink the docs say I will die. Anyway I have my passion and inspiration back for writing music.”

Whibley has now revealed in a recent interview with Vice, that he received a number of death threats during his marriage to Lavigne from one of her stalkers. Whibley told the magazine: “My ex-wife [Lavigne] had a lot of stalkers. And being married to her, they sort of wanted to come after me. There was this one guy from the UK who started sending death threats.”

The singer also confirmed that he began to take the threats more seriously, when it was deduced that the stalker had been careful not to leave fingerprints on any of his letters. Whibley continued: “He was really weird because the stuff he sent had no fingerprints on it and it was at a level that was a little bit more sophisticated. It turned out to be way more serious and he wanted to kill me for some reason. Thankfully the FBI found him over here.”

Whibley has since remarried and is reported to be recovering from his addiction.
