Following Fox TV’s huge success with it’s screening of Grease Live, scoring 12 million viewers on Sunday, the network is gearing up for it’s next foray into live musical events with The Passion.
The project—a modern interpretation of the final hours of the life of Jesus Christ, set in the present day—will feature the singer Seal as Pontius Pilate. Pontius Pilate was the government official who oversaw the trial and crucifixion of Christ.
The all-star cast list for The Passion continues to grow. Alongside Seal, the show will also feature rocker Chris Daughtry as Judas Iscariot; singer Jencarlos Canela as Jesus; country superstar Trisha Yearwood as Mary, mother of Jesus; Latin star Prince Royce as the disciple Peter; and it will be narrated by Tyler Perry.
The production will take place live in New Orleans, and will feature contemporary hits that will be arranged specifically for the production by Adam Anders, the man behind the music for Glee.
Set to last for two hours, the TV special will follow Jesus of Nazareth whilst he presides over the Last Supper. Jesus is betrayed by Judas, put on trial by Pontius Pilate, convicted, crucified and resurrected.
“The Passion” will air March 20 at 8 p.m. ET.
On an interesting note, another famous musician previously portrayed the role of Pontius Pilate. In 1989, Martin Scorsese’s controversial film The Last Temptation of Christ had Pontius Pilate portrayed by no other than the late, great, David Bowie.
