New Grateful Dead Comic Set For Release In 2020

It seems like a new stream of merch arrives on our doorstep every week. We told you of the new Rush comic book set for release this year and now joining Rush will be joined by legendary rockers the Grateful Dead.

Released via Z2 Comics, we’re told that Grateful Dead Origins will explore the early days of the band’s founder members, Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Pigpen, Bill Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart.

Part of the press release says that the comic will tell: “the story of the band’s transformation from a bar band performing as the Warlocks to becoming the creators of their own sound and forefathers for the jam-band culture.”

Grateful Dead audiovisual archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux said of the graphic novel: “We’ve seen many archival releases that offer magnificent audio representations of the Grateful Dead’s history, and several filmed interpretations of the Dead’s story,” adding: “To these, we’re thrilled to add to the Dead’s narrative canon this beautiful portrayal of the Dead’s origin story in the form of this wonderful new comic.”

Set for release in early 2020, it is actually available for pre-orders now. As with most collectibles, there will be different versions of Grateful Dead Origins. It will be available in standard and collector’s deluxe editions. Both versions of the comic will feature an exclusive download of Grateful Dead music from the band’s early years, plus the deluxe edition will also include a bonus of previously unreleased Grateful Dead music on vinyl.

Mark Pinkus, president of Rhino Entertainment, noted that: “Jerry Garcia was an avid comic book enthusiast, so it is incredibly fitting to have the Grateful Dead’s origin story told in graphic novel form.”
