Lady Gaga has released a new song titled ‘Perfect Illusion’. The song was posted online at 5:30am this morning (September 9) and is set to feature on her fifth studio album.
The song has been produced by hit-making machine Mark Ronson, Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker and Bloodpop (AKA Blood Diamonds). ‘Perfect Illusion’ is Gaga’s first single since the Diane Warren penned ballad ‘Til It Happens To You’, which was featured in the documentary film ‘The Hunting Ground’ in 2015.
On first listen ‘Perfect Illusion’ sounds like a fairly middle of the road 90s pop song (complete with obvious impact key change ¾ of the way through), and lacks some of the Gaga dance pop edge that we’ve come to expect over the years. It’s also quite difficult to tell how Ronson and Parker have had an influence on the song.
That said (and not to be too cynical), Gaga’s reputation will probably carry this song to the number one spot, even though it perhaps doesn’t belong there. It does however sound like it might be a grower.
Ronson has suggested that the new record may display a new side of Gaga, with the eccentric singer taking a more ‘analog’ approach to making music. In an interview with Charlie Rose, Ronson said of Gaga: “She’s never played guitar in public before…but guitar is something she’s learning for this record,” “That side of her, I don’t think a lot of the world has seen. It’s really great to make this very honest, authentic, kind of analog record with her.”
There is still no official release date or title for Gaga’s upcoming new album. All we know is that it will drop sometime before the end of the year, and will feature some fantastic guest performers / producers including: RedOne, Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Morodor and (if the rumours are true) even Elton John.
