Pop star Justin Timberlake has revealed that he has called upon the talents of singer / producer Pharrell Williams, to help him write and record his upcoming album. Timberlake has been working on a follow up to his 2013 smash ‘The 20/20 Experience’ for the last few months.
Pharrell Williams has been one of the most important figures in the music industry since the early 2000s. During his time as part of production duo ‘The Neptunes’, Williams has secured hits for a number of artists including: Britney Spears, Kelis, Gwen Stefani, Jay Z and Snoop Dogg.
Timberlake and Williams’ relationship goes as far back as 2002, when they co-wrote the NSYNC hit ‘Girlfriend’ from the bands third studio album ‘Celebrity’. Williams also played a huge role in both the writing and production of Timberlake’s debut solo record ‘Justified’.
Timberlake released his latest single ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’ back in May. The song featured on the soundtrack to the Dreamworks movie ‘Trolls’, and has since been certified platinum in an incredible 13 countries worldwide.
When asked about his upcoming music in a recent interview, Timberlake stated: “I wouldn’t say [my new music] is the antithesis of ‘20/20,’ but it does sound more singular. If ‘20/20’ sounded like it literally surrounds your entire head, this stuff feels more like it just punches you between the eyes.”
Meanwhile, Pharrell said of the pairs recent collaboration: “For the biggest pop stars in the world, the place where they have the most trouble is honesty. It’s hard for them to know that the beauty of a record, the sweetest spot in the song, is where they show vulnerability. Because there’s a formulaic sort of vulnerability, like, ‘Baby, I can’t sleep without you …’ and that’s not really it. But if you’re able to really screenshot your own vulnerability, and frame it properly, and colour-correct it, then it becomes something that every human can relate to. And I think Justin is in the place where he’s mastering that right now.”
