Welsh comedy hip hop group Goldie Lookin Chain have released a new song commemorating Wales’ recent magnificent performances at the Euro Championships. Wales managed to defy the odds and make it as far as the semi finals of the tournament beating Slovakia, Russia, Northern Ireland and Belgium before being knocked out by Portugal last Wednesday.
The song entitled ‘Wales Now It’s Time To Dream’ samples Justin Bieber’s recent number one hit ‘Love Yourself’ as well as Craig David’s ‘Re-Rewind’, and makes reference to the official Welsh Euro 2016 song by the Manic Street Preachers.
The Newport based band have had a string of bizarre hits since their first single ‘Guns Don’t Kill People Rappers Do’ charted at number 3 in the UK back in 2004. They also released ‘Your Mothers Got A Penis’ and ‘You Knows I Loves You’ in the same year.
‘Wales Now It’s Time To Dream’ is not actually the first time the band have dabbled in football based humour. GLC caused controversy in 2005 when they were invited by the Football Association of Wales to perform at a World Cup qualifying match between Wales and England. They dedicated the song ‘Your Missus is a Nutter’ to then England captain David Beckham. Despite Beckham supposedly taking the jest in good humour, the Welsh FA were forced to make an official apology to the Beckhams.
Goldie Lookin Chain released their latest album ‘Pill Communication’ earlier in 2016 but much of their recent popularity has come via a string of viral youtube videos rather than album sales. They posted a comedy parody of Jay-Z’s ‘Empire State of Mind’ entitled ‘Newport State of Mind (You’re Not From Newport)’ in 2010 and garnered a lot of attention for their ‘Great British Bake Off Rap’ in 2015.
Here’s hoping the Newport band can patch things up with the Welsh Football Association in time for 2018’s World Cup finals and possibly record an ‘official’ song for the Welsh football team.
