For years now, a Flight of the Conchords reunion tour has been talked about, and last year, Jemaine Clement told Billboard that he and partner Bret McKenzie were plotting a big comeback, a full-scale tour, and maybe even a new film.
The New Zealand folk duo have kept their word and have announced their first official US date in three years. It seems they’re not messing around—the boys are all set to headline at the iconic Newport Folk Festival on Friday, July 22nd.
The Newport festival has recently moved away from its folk-only roots, and because of that, has enjoyed major success. It’s true that comedy isn’t typically considered folk, and adding a comedy act is certainly new territory for the event, but with Flight of the Conchords you get the comedic value wrapped up in some incredibly well written songs and lyrics.
As of yet, the FOTC’S big tour has yet to be announced, but with the Newport Folk Festival in the duo’s diary, we are hopeful that a full Flight of the Conchords tour could be imminent.
The festival will be held from July 22nd-24th in Newport, Rhode Island. Some of the other artists already confirmed include Father John Misty (solo), Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Ray Lamontagne (with My Morning Jacket sans Jim James backing him up), The Oh Hellos and St. Paul & The Broken Bones.
