The first teaser for one of the most highly anticipated British movies of the decade is finally here. Danny Boyle’s T2: Trainspotting 2 is set for release on January 27, 2017 and already has the internet blowing up thanks to a new 41 second trailer that was posted online yesterday.
1996’s ‘Trainspotting’ (based on the Irvine Welsh novel of the same name) was one of the defining movies of its generation and made huge stars of its director Danny Boyle and lead actor Ewan McGregor. The movie, which centres around the lives of a group of heroin addicts in Scotland, became an international success and received tremendous critical acclaim due to its gritty surrealism and excellent soundtrack.
Now 20 years on, Boyle has decided to continue the story and give fans a chance to find out what became of the original movies iconic characters.
What we know so far
Trainspotting 2 will be based on Irvine Welsh 2002 novel ‘Porno’, which itself is a sequel to Transpotting. The story will follow the characters lives 20 years (as oppose to 10 in the novel) after the events of Trainspotting and their attempts to get into the pornography industry.
Actors Ewan McGregor, Ewan Bremner, Johnny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle will be reprising their respective roles as Renton, Spud, Sick Boy and Begbie.
The script has been written by screenwriter and long term Danny Boyle collaborator John Hodge, who was also responsible for the original Transpotting adapted screenplay.
Actor Robert Carlyle said of the script: T2 “is going to be quite emotional for people. Because the film sort of tells you to think about yourself. You are going to be thinking: ‘Fuck. What have I done with my life?”
Unfortunately, so far nothing is known about the soundtrack other than Iggy Pop’s ‘Lust For Life’ being used in the teaser trailer. Trainspotting featured music from a number of popular British artists of the 1990’s, so perhaps we can expect another iconic modern British soundtrack for Trainspotting 2.
