You can imagine the scene—a posh wedding, and a rockstar happens to be at the reception. There is only one thing to do, right? Bring him up to sing, of course.
Jon Bon Jovi was easily one of the biggest rock stars in the world during the ‘80s and even into the ‘90s. Even though nowadays he’s doing commercials for DirecTV (and making a pretty penny for it) and not selling out 4 nights at Madison Square Garden, he’s still one of the most recognizable faces and voices in rock music.
Here’s the thing, when you have someone like Bon Jovi as a guest at a wedding reception, and although you know he doesn’t want to be asked to sing, you as a band member playing the reception have to at least ask him to get up and sing.
Unfortunately for Bon Jovi, the wedding band knew he was going to attend, and had already prepared a jazzy version of Bon Jovi’s classic hit “Livin’ on a Prayer”. The wedding band’s singer Lourdes Valentin said she approached Bon Jovi before the reception, and he said he absolutely did not want to sing. That should have been the end of it right?
But during the reception, on comes the band’s version of “Livin’ on a Prayer”, and what else could he do?
You can see in the video that the singer felt the pressure to perform, and hats off to him; he was a good sport and obliged the band and guests.
You can’t help but think that next time Bon Jovi plans to attend a wedding reception he’ll RSVP by saying: “I’m coming, but no singing.”
