Moviegoers who enjoyed this summer’s biographical American love story Southside With You, the film about the blossoming romance between a young Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama, will be excited to hear that Netflix has released a trailer for another new film about our incumbent president; Barry (what Obama was known as among his friends), stars Devon Terrell as Barack Obama.
The story of Barry follows a young Barack on his first day in New York in the autumn of 1981 as he branched off into his studies at Columbia University.
An official synopsis of Barry reads, “In a crime-ridden and racially charged environment, Barry finds himself pulled between various social spheres and struggles to maintain a series of increasingly strained relationships with his Kansas-born mother, his estranged Kenyan father, and his classmates. Barry is the story of a young man grappling with those same issues that his country, and arguably the world, are still coming to terms with 35 years later.”
Barry premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last month; where Netflix picked it up. It was directed by Vikram Gandhi (Kumaré), and will also star actresses Ashley Judd (Divergent) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), as well as actor Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton).
It premieres on Netflix December 16, 2016.
