Acclaimed UK electronic music pioneer Aphex Twin has released his first official music video in 17 years directed by a 12 year old youtuber.
The reclusive musician (Richard D. James) is set to launch his latest EP ‘Cheetah’ on July 8, a follow up to 2015’s ‘Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments pt2’. The first single from the EP entitled ‘CIRKLON3 [ Колхозная mix ]’ was released earlier this week and accompanied in traditional Aphex Twin style by a truly bizarre music video. Perhaps what is most amazing however, is that the video was directed by unknown Irish preteen Ryan Wyer.
James claims to have been impressed by the young lad’s youtube channel which contains home made music videos for numerous electronic musicians including Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Underworld and The Prodigy. Not only does Ryan Wyer have a pretty great taste in music for a 12 year old but also seems to share James’ taste in glitchy video art.
The video for ‘CIRKLON3 [ Колхозная mix ]’ features Wyer with his family and friends dancing around wearing Aphex Twin shirts and occasionally sporting a mask of the iconic ‘Richard D. James’ album cover. The video was shot in Dublin presumably in front of Wyer’s house and heavily effected with psychedelic colour schemes and glitchy frame changes.
Prior to the release of the music video, the majority of Wyer’s posts had under 100 views but ‘CIRKLON3 [ Колхозная mix ]’ seems to be an instant hit on youtube, racking up a massive 300,000 views in a matter of days. At the end of the credit sequence there is an ominous ‘To Be Continued’, possibly hinting at future videos from the young irishman.
‘Cheetah’ is available for preorder from Bleep and Itunes and may even be released on James’ soundcloud profile in coming weeks. https://soundcloud.com/richarddjames
