Sinead O’Conner Rips up A Photo of the Pope

Never one to shy away from controversy, the out spoken singer used her appearance on Saturday Night Live to attack the Catholic Church and the Pope. She tore up a picture of John Paul II, throwing the pieces at the camera, adding “fight the real enemy”. The action was intended to raise awareness of the sexual abuse going on in the Church. While seen as outrageous and controversial at the time, in light of recent revelations, no one can really deny the legitimacy of her actions anymore.

Killing in the Name of becomes Christmas No.1

It came as a bit of a shock that such a deeply political song managed to beat all the commercial Christmas jingles from claiming the top spot. It was commonly understood that X Factor winner Joe McElderry’s cover of The Climb by Miley Cyrus would become the year’s Christmas no.1 with ease. But after a fan-led Facebook campaign promoting Killing in the Name of, the Rage Against the Machine classic swooped in and stole the top spot.

BBC Bans Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood

Like an overbearing, conservative parent the BBC deemed the S&M theme of Relax to be an affront on the nation’s apparently straight laced morality. The decision to ban the song came after the music video was aired on TV featuring S&M iconography and half naked men and women.

Charles Manson Composes a Song for the Beach Boys

In an ironic twist, the mastermind behind a horrific mass murder wrote a tune for the generally upbeat, sun, sea and surf band the Beach Boys. The song, Never Learn not to Love, was released on the bands album, 20/20.

Ozzy Slaughters a Bat by Biting off its Head

No list of controversial moments in rock history would be complete without mentioning the time that the prince of darkness bit the head of a live bat in front of an audience of thousands. Ozzy claims he thought the bat was a fake, but who knows. Either way, the sight of the frontman tearing off the head of a bat with his teeth made for a stunning spectacle that has gone down as one of the most controversial moments in rock history.
