Contemporary non-profit theater La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, CA is set to debut the world premiere of a musical based on the sounds of country rock’s favorite slapstick crooner Jimmy Buffett.
Margaritaville, will feature a number of Buffett’s most beloved hits like “Cheeseburger In Paradise” and “Margaritaville ” as well as several new songs Buffett has written specifically for the show.
Buffett’s musical, is set for curtains up on May 16, 2017, with an official opening night set for May 28, and will run through the month of June. The late spring premiere will also serve as the first show to launch the famous theater into their 2017/2018 season.
An original story written by television writer Greg Garcia (My Name Is Earl, Yes, Dear) and Mike O’Malley, the synopsis relays the feel-good tale of an optimistic young lad named Tully–a part-time bartender, and up-and-coming singer/songwriter who falls into distraction as his love for a pretty girl begins to bloom.
Christopher Ashley, artistic director for La Jolla Playhouse, and director of the Tony Award-winning musical Memphis, released a statement to Deadline.com upon the announcement of the Buffett musical, praising the likes of the blues/country star.
“Jimmy Buffett’s music has embedded itself in our national consciousness – his songs are not only anthems of popular culture, they’re practically a way of life,” states Ashley. “ I couldn’t resist the chance to visit Margaritaville with this team to bring his singular spirit to the stage in a brand new Playhouse musical.”
Founded in 1947 by actor Mel Ferrer, actor Gregory Peck, and actress Dorothy McGuire, the southern Cali theater is home to a handful of shows which have found international acclaim, such as Chaplin, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Matthew Broderick’s take on How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
The musical is produced by Frank Marshall, Anita Waxman, Beth Williams, and Mindy Rich.
Further details, including information on casting, have yet to be announced.
