American RnB group TLC have released a brand new single featuring Snoop Dogg. The song, titled ‘Way Back’, is the girl group’s first official release since 2005’s ‘I Bet’, and is reported to be the first track from a new comeback album.
TLC were one of the biggest RnB groups of the 1990s. Formed in 1991 by Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins, Rozondo ‘Chilli’ Thomas, and Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes, TLC became an overnight sensation when they released their debut album ‘Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip’ in 1992.
The group released their most commercially successful record titled ‘FanMail’ in 1999. The album peaked at number one on the Billboard 200, and was supported by the hit singles ‘No Scrubs’, ‘Unpretty’ and ‘Dear Lie’. The album has since been certified 6X platinum in the US.
TLC suffered a huge setback in 2002 when band member Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes tragically died in a car crash whilst filming a documentary in Honduras. Following Lopes’ death, the group had originally decided to retire, but later carried on as a duo after the release of their fourth album ‘3D’.
After a number of years in the wilderness, TLC have now released a brand new single. ‘Way Back’ is rumoured to feature on a new studio album, which has been crowdfunded by a kickstarter campaign. The campaign is said to have raised over $430,000.
Record producer Ron Fair recently said of TLC’s material: “It’s old soul music. It’s ’90s throwback music. It’s vintage TLC and I can tell you that their vocals sound exactly the way they did the last time you heard them.
He added: “Their artistic and vocal thing is 100 percent intact so this is gonna become a question of what are they talking about, what are the lyrics, what are the beats they’ve chosen. And I’m very excited for the world to hear.”
