Strat Superstars: Mark Knopfler

From the opening riff on “Money For Nothing” to the unmistakable style and sound on “Sultans of Swing”, Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knopfler is easy to pick out.KNOPHLER SQ

Though his influences are fairly obvious to identify, Dylan, JJ Cale, to name but a couple, he was somehow able to mold them all into one, and unleashed them on the world on the band’s debut album, Sultans of Swing back in 1977.

Not dissimilar to Strat-man Jeff Beck, Knopfler did away with picks and decided to go finger style; this, and his masterful use of the ‘in-between’ out-of-phase positioning on a 3-way vintage Strat makes him one of the most interesting and innovative players around.

Knopfler uses a ‘57 Strat and now has his own Signature Series, which is a faithful recreation of his own, but with the addition of a 5-way switch to recreate Knopfler’s sound much easier.
