The 89th annual Academy Awards ceremony took place on Monday night (February 26) at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The event featured a number of hilarious moments thanks to its brilliant host Jimmy Kimmel; however, the 2017 Oscars will no doubt be remembered for its bizarre ‘Best Picture’ mix up.
The ceremony was opened by pop singer Justin Timberlake who gave a rousing rendition of his song ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’. The opening number was followed by a hilarious monologue from host Jimmy Kimmel; in which he trolled long term rival Matt Damon, made light of the Meryl Streep ‘over-rated’ scandal and sent a tweet to President Donald Trump.
Before the ceremony began, the sensible money was on both ‘La La Land’ and ‘Manchester By The Sea’ to take home the nights biggest prizes, and the films did not disappoint with Casey Affleck and Emma Stone bagging the awards for Best Actor & Actress.
What followed was one of the strangest moments in Oscars history – when actors Warren Beaty and Faye Dunaway announced that ‘La La Land’ had won the award for ‘Best Picture’. It later turned out that Beaty had been handed the wrong announcement card and Barry Jenkins’ ‘Moonlight’ had been the actual winner. Fortunately the cast and crew of ‘La La Land’ were forgiving of the mistake and graciously handed their awards over.
