A number of recent reports are indicating that rappers Jay Z and Kanye West have patched up their friendship and may start working on a new collaborative record in the near future. The two hip hop heavyweights have formed a strong alliance over the years and previously worked together on 2011’s ‘Watch The Throne’.
Kanye West’s highly publicised meltdown last October was one of the biggest music stories of 2016. Kanye discussed a number of issues close to his heart during his bizarre on-stage rants, yet perhaps the most significant piece of information he gave the ‘Saint Pablo’ crowd was that his relationship with Jay Z seemed to be coming to an end.
During a show in Seattle, Kanye criticised Jay Z stating: “Don’t call me, after the robbery, and say ‘how you feelin?’” “You wanna know how I’m feelin’? Come by the house. Bring the kids by the house. Like we’re brothers. Let’s sit down.” “I can’t take this shit, bro. Our kids have never even played together.”
He would later go on to suggest that Jay Z had hired hitmen to silence him, before checking into a psychiatric hospital to be treated for sleep deprivation and extreme dehydration.
2011’s ‘Watch The Throne’ was one of the most successful records of the year and contained some of the greatest tracks that either rapper had ever put out. The album peaked at number one in over five countries and has since been certified platinum in both the US and UK.
After the events of 2016, fans of ‘Watch The Throne’ began to suspect that there may never be a sequel; however, a source close to the artists has now suggested that West and Jay Z may be planning on reuniting. Talking to UK newspaper The Sun, the source explained: “Kanye is over the moon to have his ‘family’ back. He is starting to feel like himself again, knowing he has the support of Jay and Beyonce. Some new tracks would be fascinating given what Kanye has been through over the past year. But under the watchful eye of his mentor and ‘big bro’ Jay, it would be huge.”
